Influences

The primary objective of assemblage is to create an exhibition, research creation and gathering space that can be used as an incubator for emerging and established artists, designers and critical thinkers.

Inspired by Gordon Matta-Clark, Carol Goodden and Tina Girourard’s 1971 “FOOD” project1, and the rise of artist collectives in Toronto in the 1980s2, assemblage provides a local network of university studios and labs with a public facing exhibition and meeting space. Participating individuals are also given the opportunity to engage in limited term interdisciplinary research creation projects, interactions and mentorship activities that seek to address emerging issues related to the challenges of our time.

1 FOOD was established in a renovated storefront in lower Manhattan (now SoHo) in 1971 as a community hub for artists to gather, exchange ideas and eat affordable food. For more information about “FOOD” see: Lee, Pamela M., Object to Be Destroyed: The Work of Gordon Matta-Clark, pg. 68. See here.
